Bottom Line: 6/10 This race is okay if you live in the area and are up for a 5k or 10k that will allow a little socialization with the community and let's you enjoy the beautiful view that you are most likely very familiar with. The course is mostly flat and all on pavement. The competition is low and there is a 1k kids fun run that looked very enjoyable for all the youngsters.

The longest distance in High School was the 5k. At the time I thought this was an incredible distance and was amazed when I broke 20:00, but now that I've ran several Halfs and 5milers I find that 5k's are way too short for me.

The 5k I ran today was at Lover's Point in Monterey, CA and the race was for the county rape crisis center. The race seemed set up well enough and there were lots of amazing runners and the Average Joe just running to get in shape. Among the runners was a 12 year old boy who ran in 18:35, plus a 3 year old who completed the course in 30 minutes. I'm a bit skeptical as to whether the mother carried the child at any point because this is obviously an amazing feat.

First off, there was a malfunction with the starting gun and the clock started without the gun, leading to the runners all confused for about half a second before we all just ran out anyway.

My big complaint on the run is the awards. 1:They only ran 3 deep in each category. 2:20-29?! I am 20 years old and I would have placed third in my age group if not for them extending the age bracket to 29. In any other race I've been to there's a 20-24 and then a 25-29...this one, not so much.

Another complaint: The announcer! Unfortunately, I have yet to see many female announcers who do it well. She had an annoying voice and she loved to make all these stupid little comments that made me want to just hit her. It took like half an hour from the time the last runner crossed the finish line until the awards got started. It should not have taken as long as it did.

Good point: There was a raffle, that I did not win, which gave out a variety of gift certificates and other valuables. That combined with the random prizes they threw into the crowd redeemed them just a little. I happened to catch an Aasics T-shirt and am very happy about that. Considering the lousy looking race shirt I should consider it a blessing I got the Aasics one.

Anyone living in about 5 miles of Monterey should give this run a shot, but honestly it's nothing great. I think it is great if you're trying to get your children into running.
